Iconography In the Abstract
These multi-disciplinary artists come together to present new work that addresses the use of symbols in a non-objective context. This two-man show features recent abstractions on canvas, panel and paper that suggest history, time, and organic growth.
Though born in New York City, Christopher Cousins was raised in Oklahoma where he was greatly influenced by the various artis tic expressions of American Indian cultures. As a teenager he traveled through Europe and saw immediately the connections between the religious yearning in European art and the spiritual themes in Native American expression. Cousins writes, "I look to create fields of action or archetypal landscapes in which this struggle takes place. This sacred space is the sphere in which sacrifice, redemption, suffering, ecstasy, obliteration and, ultimately, resurrection occur and effect transformations in our being. This symbolic space is inside us and outside us, it is cosmic and microcosmic; it is space itself."
Luke Rothschild is a Los Angeles based visual artist, composer, and musician whose work spans a broad stylistic spectrum. His visual artwork revolves around the organic nature of rust, and the marks that rust and decay produce. His paintings and assemblage objects address the poetry of oxidization and residue. Luke works with found objects and arranges them on a neutral field to create a visual testimonial, then coerces this organic form of decomposition into a cohesive language of forms and images.
Luke received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he nurtured a multidisciplinary approach to integrating various mediums.
